48 Hour Water Fast

Have you considered fasting on water for 48 hours? I’ve done a 2 day water fast six times in the last two years. Day 2 of a water fast is the most difficult one. Today, I want to share with you my water fasting diary, vlog, benefits, and overall results. I’ll tell you about my failures, too. My goal is to help you understand both the benefits and challenges of water fasting. I’ll answer your questions, as well.

Introduction

I explained in great detail on this blog how and why I started fasting on water. In fact, I wrote a whole series about it called water fasting how to. To give you just a quick overview: I was depressed and suicidal while experiencing narcissistic relationship abuse in my marriage with a man who was used to morbid obesity and had really bad eating habits.

In that marriage, not only did I suffer from depression, which resulted from mental cruelty imposed on me by the narcissist, but also I picked some negative eating habits and even gained 20 lb. I was sick all the time. So, on my narcissistic abuse recovery journey, I tried fasting on water, and it worked. I was in my 30s already.

I fell in love with fasting!

Now, I want to tell you the truth: I’ve done a 2 day water fast six times in the last two years, and day 2 of a water fast is the most difficult one, which is why I also failed a 48 hour water fast three times.

Again and again, I was able to go for 38 hours.

But not 48…

That being said, I love a 2 day water fast for its doability. What do I mean? I believe, from my own personal fasting experience, that a 48 hour fast is doable.

It is way more doable than a 5 day water fast! To go without any food for five days requires a huge commitment and some serious excess body fat. I am 5’10”, 116 lb, and my size is zero. Here’s a picture of me from a few days ago. By the way, I began running at 37, thanks to water fasting!

I don’t have much fat. I’m lean and fit at 37 years old. Yesterday, I watched a very interesting documentary called “Fat-Topia.” It shocked me to see how body fat is being celebrated, glorified, and promoted today in the western countries, Europe, and China, as if it weren’t the worst source of cancer growth, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and premature death for people.

All overweight people I personally know on an intimate friendship level want to lose weight, try weight loss, and in fact losing weight is their biggest dream. I want you to look at a chart showing the CDC’s statistics called “Prevalence of obesity among adults aged 20 and over: United States, 1997–2015.” The fat problem is massive, and it’s growing like a snowball. This health issue of excessive body fat is killing adults and children.

“Severe obesity almost doubled,” said study author Dr. Craig Hales. He’s a medical epidemiologist with the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Much more than just a cosmetic issue, obesity is associated with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, arthritis, gallbladder disease and more, according to the U.S. National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Hales said there’s no easy answer to this growing public health threat.

“Obesity is a very complex health issue associated with many different health factors,” he said. These factors include individual choices and societal ones, such as the kinds of foods that are easily available. The age group most affected by severe obesity is adults aged 40-59.

The Fat-Fobia documentary blew my mind.

I don’t accept excessive body fat for myself, and I will not accept it. I had a lot of fat, so I know how sick it made me feel. To lose fat, I had to first love my body and be grateful, as well as practice self-compassion and understanding as to why I gained fat. That being said, the truth is excess body fat is dangerous/; it has nothing to do with looks or fashion or beauty. Carrying body fat compromises your health!

Visible body fat is only a part of the problem. The real problem is invisible, visceral fat. Visceral fat is the fat stored deep inside the belly, wrapped around the organs, including the liver and intestines. I recommend reading the article called “Visceral Fat: Why It’s Dangerous.

To be healthy, to have normal blood pressure, to protect the bones, the arteries, and the essential organs, such as liver, kidney, lungs, and heart, fat must be kept at a minimum. Excessive fat is the cause of so many unnecessary illnesses and early death! Also, it alters your genes and causes generational health issues, in addition to aging.

So, to keep fat away, I love water fasting.

A 48 hour water fast is easier than a 5 day fast.

Going without eating for 48 hours is more doable than doing it for 120 hours! It’s very different physically, with fewer benefits, but it’s more doable for me. It is more doable than a 3 day water fast, which is also more beneficial because it helps the body enter the state of ketosis when fat is burned from the body’s storages.

All things considered, for someone my size and complexion, a skinny woman who wants to maintain low body fat and remain lean, a 48 hour water fast is a more reachable goal on a consistent basis.

Yet, I like fasting regularly!

I Failed a 2 Day Water Fast 3 Times

By now, you heard my many reasons for fasting on water for two days. Why would I be failing at 2 day water fast attempts? It’s complicated. Figuring this out takes more work and makes me work harder than I did for my MBA! Here’s what I’ve learned from failing several 48 hour water fast attempts: food isn’t just food for most people.

What do I mean?

Most people use food for reasons way beyond just nutritional needs. I am currently on a journey to explore and understand why I eat when I don’t want to eat or what I don’t approve of eating.

I keep a journal about that. It’s called “A Binge-Eating Journal.” Yes, I binge-eat often, without my own approval! This is a complex issue but I’ll try to share a few important lessons I learned. I pray that this can perhaps can help you understand yourself.

That’s really my genuine hope.

So, here are my discoveries…

Growing up during the crush of USSR, we often had limited food. In Soviet Russia, food was only given to us by communists based on food stamps. The entire country had food stamps: one stamp for a chicken, one stamp for a loaf of bread, etc. I remember waiting in line at 6 am in the winter in the snow as a little girl outside the grocery store to get one small chicken.

I remember my mom sitting in front of me watching me eat a chicken leg. I grew tall fast and was the tallest girl in my age category for many years. So, I was hungry all the time. I asked for more food. She gave me another chicken leg. While chewing it, I remember asking my mom why she wasn’t eating since we typically ate together. She said she ate already. I asked what she ate, while trying to process how come she ate since she was feeding me the fresh food she literally just made. She said she ate a chicken leg. I was finishing my meal when it hit me: she was lying. I said: “But the chicken only has two legs and I ate both…” Mom started crying.

I also remember the food abuse I endured from my relatives when my mom was raising me on welfare while they had plenty but wouldn’t share, though they loved teasing me and even bullying me with food.

In 2009, I was rescued by the police from a domestic violence situation in my marriage here in America. The officers took me to a shelter in Stone Mountain, GA. I worked a lot: as a hostess in restaurants, as a housekeeper, as a driver for a car dealer, as a nanny, as a dog sitter…

I had food stamps on welfare. Often, I’d come back to the shelter after work, hungry and exhausted, only to discover that someone ate my food. I lost 10 lb while I was there, and when I got there I was size double-zero already. I was constantly hungry and sick. One day, we had no food in the shelter at all. I was in my 20s. Experiencing that impacted my psyche in a big way.

In 2016, I got remarried. In my article about narcissistic abuse examples, I share how the narcissist demanded that I give him my paycheck, which I did. He left me with no money for food three times.

I would be at work, where I drove 100 miles every day, and I’d be hungry with no money because he’d spend it all. He practiced other types of food abuse but for now, I just wanted to share these examples so that you can see: fasting on water may not be so easy due to emotions associated with food and the process of eating. Experiencing abuse from the narc altered my psyche and left me wounded in ways that I’m still trying to uncover and understand.

In addition to eating carrying the meaning of safety and normality, food means “comfort” to me. This is all happening on a subconscious level. It was beyond my awareness for years and took hard work to figure out. I’m just sharing some of this today to help demonstrate why fasting on water is literally rocket science: not because of nutritional aspects of food but because of its emotional aspects! This challenge has to do very little with physical hunger but it has everything to do with what’s in your head and the trauma you endured in the past.

Below are detailed and very honest, unedited, unfiltered journal entries documenting my multiple failed 2 day water fast attempts.

Day 2 of Fasting on Water 4-16-2020

I woke up at 5:10 am to pee and found myself smiling because I felt calm and light and clear and surrendered. I looked in the mirror and saw that my lower belly pooch was gone, my belly is very flat. I felt good: no headache but growling stomach and thoughts of food, yet they are not intense like yesterday

In my dreams, I saw food.

So, I slept more, but lightly, felt a headache coming, woke up with a slight headache at 8:51 am, I’m staying in bed doing the reading challenge. I drank water, a little bit, my mouth is still dry but I’m spacing out my water intake to avoid water intoxication.

It’s 9:21 am. My heart is racing a bit, I’m still in bed, watching Dr. Klaper on fasting. It’s 46F outside, I have no heat at home, I’m just not in need of any, I am comfortable as far as my temperature and home temperature, it’s 68F here at home.

Dr. Klaper says, while fasting, look for:

  • Nausea
  • Pounding headache
  • Light-headedness from low blood pressure

It’s 10 am. I feel good and can’t stop smiling. I’m still in bed, watching True North Health Center patient vídeos about fasting. I see so much better! My vision is sharp

It’s 10:16 am. I’m getting out of bed.

To help prevent vomiting like last time on day two, I’m drinking less water, I intake it slowly, and I’m going to lift my legs up before getting out of bed now, so I’m going to do some exercises in bed to get my blood flow going.

It’s now 10:22 am and I’m up and feeling excellent. I did some exercises in bed and got down on my knees out of bed before getting up. I prayed and stretched and now I’m up.

It’s 1:20 pm. I broke the fast with some soup because of lightheaded feeling increase and some confusion occurring.

Day 2 of Fasting on Water 4-19-2020

I ate around 1 am: some simple soup, so I broke my fast… I couldn’t stretch to day two of my water fasting… I’m drinking tea and plan to eat again at 6. I’ll be eating today and fasting tomorrow

I’m thinking that maybe every other day will work?

I want to prepare my body for a long fast.

Day 2 of Fasting on Water 7-9-2020

After 9 hours of sleep, I woke up on my own and exercised my abs, legs, inner thighs, all in bed. I drank some water but my headache hasn’t gone away. I slept very well but woke up to a headache.

My body feels hot.

My stomach isn’t hurting or making any noises.

It’s calm. I’m calm in my spirit.

I’m committed to liberating my soul.

A genuine fast cleanses the body, mind and soul. It crucifies the flesh and to that extent sets the soul free.

Mahatma Gandhi

My acne dried up already, both on my chest and belly. I moisturized my skin and massages my gut area gently. Self-care is important.

I am thinking about the incredible adjustment my body has made in the last couple of months since I’ve resumed my fasting adventures. My weight is perfect. My body looks and feels like my own.

My double-chin is gone. My thighs don’t touch anymore. My legs look slim and free from excessive cellulite. No excess fat on my legs anymore. I look 12 years younger. I feel amazing! I am healthy.

Most importantly, I feel like my spirit is stronger and I’m working on liberating my soul from food dependencies. Relying on God and remembering why I’m here on earth is essential to be able to fast on water only.

My prayer:

Dear God, you are my maker, savior, leader, master, and friend. I ask that you continue pruning me so that I can be more fruitful in this life and prepare for eternity becoming Christ-like. Jesus fasted for 40 days. I am fasting like Jesus, in secret, genuinely, to glorify you and to continue my commitment to having you and only you as my master. Please give me the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional strength to do this prolonged water fast. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

I got out of bed with no dizziness or nausea. Yaaaay! Because I have experienced bile vomiting on a water fast in my second day previously, I’m very careful about getting up.

It’s a beautiful sunny day, and I might take a walk after work. This is going to be a very productive day. My heart is not pounding like crazy, so I’m grateful for my body’s calmness so far.

Day 3 of water fasting is hard, so I expect some difficulties tomorrow but I hope to be able to continue fasting on water, one day at a time. As soon as I got up and did my morning hygiene routine, I pooped. It was one piece, still a bit green from the kale and broccoli I ate two days ago. I love having no constipation, no bloating, no discomfort in my belly.

I love love love being healthy!

I’m glad I ate a ton of veggies before doing this water fast. I feel excellent, except for the headache. I did two loads of laundry, put everything away, dusted my home, and took a cold shower. Of course, I moisturized my skin very well after that, and now I’m working.

It’s 1 pm. I just broke my water fast after 38 hours of fasting. My headache became intolerable, so I followed Dr. Klaper’s advise and ate: cherries, melon, broccoli, purple cauliflower, a few almonds, and asparagus. I also took vitamin B12.

I feel good about my decision.

After I ate, I pooped.

I watched a mind-blowing documentary called “China’s Big Problem- The rise of Obesity,” and another film I watched was the “Food Fight” documentary.

I’ve Done a 2 Day Water Fast 6 Times

If you read my water fasting diary above, you can see how a 48 hour water fast can be difficult. So, when I was able to do it, I was fully committed. Why would I not be fully committed every time I decide to do a 2 day water fast? I’m figuring this out right now. It’s a process, a journey, not an event. It takes openness to exploring deep trauma.

I’m observing myself walking this path, trying to understand myself and my relationship with food, as well as what impacted how this important relationship formed. So far, I’ve learned a lot but I don’t have all the answers. I’m willing to share what I have learned, which is what this Christian blog is for, and I hope it helps you in some way.

I’ve done a 48 hour fast six times in the past two years. Below are my vlogs and blogs sharing my unedited, honest, unfiltered water fasting diary. If you’re thinking about fasting, this info can help you figure out what to expect. No water fast is the same. There are so many variables. But reading my journals below and watching my vlogs documenting my 2 day water fast adventures, you may be able to find some helpful explanations of your own challenges, symptoms, or pain. Perhaps, you’ll find comfort knowing that you are not doing this alone.

Day 2 Water Fast 3-28-2018

My initial water fast was cold-turkey, going all in, and I knew so little about fasting on water. Years have passed, and I learned a lot. I’ve practiced a lot, too, so now I know that fasting on water implies that you drink pure water only. Also, I know that you will not starve because you have fat storages to use for extended periods of time. More about this below.

In March on 2018, my primary goals were a total and complete depression recovery, weight loss, acne elimination, and overall health optimization. I was entering a new season of life and wanted a lot of energy, no more illnesses, and my body back.

So, I fasted for the first time.

Here’s my vlog.

Day 2 Water Fast 7-4-2018

The company where I worked in 2018 was a tech startup. Nasty, crap-loaded, dangerously-unhealthy snacks were everywhere, they were free, and everyone ate them all day long. It was the first time I worked in an environment where people literally chewed on food non-stop all day.

I was shocked at first. Then, I got used to it.

Before, I worked at companies where people wore a suit to work or at least business casual, ate lunch one time, and were productive and busy intellectually for the rest of the day. The new company had people who wore pjs and flip-flops to work showing up 20 minutes after they just woke up, eating in the office all day long starting with breakfast, and mostly talking all day about food: what they plan to eat, what they ate, what they like eating, and on and on the daily madness continued.

Everyone was totally cool with it.

It was overwhelming to me, and my antidote to that madness was fasting to clear my palette, to reduce my weight, and to practice self-control in an environment of horrible food available for free all around me: chips, crackers, cakes, sodas, and whatever other crap, I didn’t even know what some of that processed crap was in the office pantry.

So, I fasted on water when we worked from home.

Here’s my vlog.

Day 2 Water Fast 12-24-2018

I fasted on water again for Christmas 2018 because of something that happened to my neighbor: she ate frozen fat-and-junk-loaded crap and ended up passing kidney stones. Her husband asked me to take her to the hospital where, right before my eyes, a very skilled sales person called “doctor” sold my neighbor of an expensive and dangerous gallbladder removal surgery, which she bought into and gave up her precious and very much essential gallbladder.

I was shocked. At the time, I was eating vegan processed foods, such as vegan cheeses, vegan butter, vegan cakes, cheeses, and burgers. I knew that while they had no animal products, they were loaded with health-compromising chemicals. Most importantly, I didn’t need to eat that, yet I didn’t know why I ate all that vegan junk food.

So, I fasted on water to clear my palette.

Here’s my vlog.

Day 2 Water Fast 5-1-2020

My weight 131.4 lb

I woke up around 6 am very light-headed.

I sipped from a straw out of a water jar placed last night near my bed. I sipped water without lifting my head too much to avoid throwing up.

At 9:30 am, I’m up. I’m dizzy and my stomach is making so much noise but I washed, brushed my teeth, brushed my hair, peed, weighed myself. I took the laundry out of the washer, placed it into the dryer. Yesterday, I did laundry and cleaned my entire patio during the day. That was great!

I plan to stay in bed given my period and fasting. I’m very light-headed and, unlike yesterday when I felt cold, today I feel hot. I’m staying home to avoid temptations. Basically, I’m avoiding my neighbors.

It’s 10:50 am. I just folded my laundry and put it all away. I did my manicure, which was great and relaxing. I’ve been on my feet for one hour and 20 min, so I’m very dizzy. I have a slight headache and I’m going to bed to watch some food documentaries and interviews with Dr. Alan Goldhamer.

I’m realizing that I’m not a typical struggling food addict because I don’t eat chocolates, pizzas, french fries, ice creams, chips, sodas, none of that. But I do have a real problem, and no one ever gave me some space and time to talk about it, except Maria and my kind neighbor who struggles with the same thing. I’m watching now my next food-learning video.

It’s 12:30 pm. My stomach is making so much noise, I’m really hungry, and my neighbor Flame just brought me homemade coconut yogurt she prepared for me. It was kind of awkward when she rang the doorbell, I’m all dizzy and definitely not going to invite anyone inside, plus I don’t eat anything, yet I don’t tell anyone, so I was trying to make something up quickly… It was uncomfortable, for sure.

Her yogurt looks delicious and beautiful. It was hard to resist. I gave her my soup with 20 veggies, which I made a few days ago, and looking in my fridge was tempting: so much goodness there! Kale, soup, mushrooms, pasta, Brussels sprouts… but I am committed to my water fast. I can do this! Food is not my master!

I put Flame’s yogurt in the fridge.

My sense of smell is very sharp today and I’m smelling my neighbors’ food, too! I’m so hungry! I’m drinking my water slowly, little by little. I haven’t been vomiting or anything. It’s more of an emotional torture. But I can do this, I know I can.

I’m in bed watching food documentaries to understand what happened to me in my 12 years in America and how I got conquered by food, gained unwanted weight, and became a slave to intrusive thoughts of eating. This is so hard. I’m crying…

It’s 1:37 pm. I’m watching more and more documentaries about food to understand my own personal journey and challenges with food. I feel ok. I’m cold, hot, cold, hot, cold… I’m very hungry, too!

I’m watching some interesting videos about fasting on water. It gives me so much to ponder! Water fasting is an ancient healing tool. I am healing now, though it feels as if I were dying. Most of the struggle is in my head, I know it. can figure this out… I have to!

It’s 5:57 pm. I’m about to get up and pee.

My back hurts, my stomach still makes a ton of noise, my mouth feels like a rat literally died in there, I’m hot but I know that these are the very indications that my water fast is working! I’m committed 100% and I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

It’s 8:40 pm. I just woke up from a peaceful nap. I iced down my back and it’s ok now. I’m really hungry and weak. I peed, and it stinks really bad. Also, I smell my sweat, it stinks, too, which is unusual. My body is detoxing properly, that’s what these signs indicate. That’s good.

My heart is pounding but I’m back in bed.

I’m watching my next water fasting video.

I’m learning about food addiction and my relapses into eating animal products, overeating, and much more. What a breakthrough in regards to why I’ve struggled with continuing my water fast. Here’s the explanation.

Caffeine, bread, vegan cheese, vegan butter, pasta, pasta sauces, honey – all of these are extremely addictive. It’s understandable why it’s been so hard to resist all the drugs I just mentioned. That’s why I crave pasta, bread, butter, vegan cheese, and honey.

I do see that indeed I did get addicted to food but only certain kinds of food – addictive foods, including the dangerous crap-filled vegan milk. And I can’t blame myself because I didn’t know. Now I do know.

Also, that video above talks about establishing a feeding schedule as well as not eating late at night. That explained how I gained weight and why I overeat.

The Bible says I should fast without telling anyone, and not telling anyone that I’m fasting has made fasting easier. I’m glad I’m doing this in secret. Staying home is the best for now.

I’ve learned from the video above how important it is to wake up, eat, and go to bed at the same time every day. I’ve learned also that it’s ok to not eat beans at all so I feel great because I plan to no longer be eating legumes of any kind. I will not consume any bread, pasta, coffee, vegan processed junk, and I plan to significantly reduce my intake of honey.

Here’s my next video about fasting on water.

It’s 11 pm and I’m going to sleep.

I feel like throwing up, and my right knee hurts, as well as my lower back on the right, so I’m going to use some ice on my back. I’ve drunk water slowly, got up slowly, spent 90% of my day in bed, and I’ve learned so much!

I have a better understanding of why I’ve struggled with food: because in America I’ve been surrounded by addictive substances called “healthy foods” made specifically to get me addicted to crap and to crave, overeat, binge eat, and genuinely suffer. Today I also massaged my body but only a little bit because my energy is so low. I feel grateful for this day, though my mouth tastes like a dead rat and I stink, literally.

I’m realizing how privileged I am to be able to do something so intense on my own. Glory to God for this experience. Thank God I can do this at home and don’t have to travel to California or Russia to fast on water.

Day 2 Water Fast 5-23-2020

Hunger: hungry a little bit waking up; a little bit thirsty; no nausea or light-headiness but my heart is pounding a little. I got up to pee at 1:30 am and had no dizziness. I’m feeling really good! Leg workout in bed and I’ll get up slowly.

Feelings: I feel empowered and encouraged by the fact that I didn’t give in to any food temptations yesterday while cooking a lot of delish food. My home smells like the best restaurant ever. Every time I enter into my home, the strong smell of roasted potatoes with garlic and vegetable soup hit my senses. But I’m remaining committed to my goals. I’m grateful for my ability and desire to take these health challenges and do what it takes to help my body with a regular internal cleanup through autophagy via water fasting. I can run now, my body is getting healthier and healthier every day in every way. Thank God!

Poop 6:15 am – easy, huge, no smell at all

It’s 6:36 am and I just finished my workout on the mat. I feel a bit dizzy since I worked out on the floor so I’m taking a short rest before I go for my 10,000 step walk run.

It’s a beautiful and peaceful morning. The birds are singing loudly, I love it! I had made my bed when I got up after sleeping, so I’m taking this short rest on the couch in my office. My windows are open and I enjoy the fresh air after it rained at night. Ok, time to walk and run!

It’s 9:05 am and I’m taking another short break after my 3500 steps outside, standing arm workout, hair wash, makeup, and preparation for my photoshoot. It’s at 9:30 am. What a beautiful sunny day!

It’s noon. I just finished my photoshoot and I’m about to take a nap. We started at 9:30 am and soon the floating dock outside my front door in the river got really busy: there was a neighbor making hotdogs and giving them to kayakers and tubers, there was a gentleman fishing, and two leading getting their floats ready… There is a lot going on today – it’s the Memorial Day weekend Saturday. I am sticking to my fast until this evening and will eat after my 48-hours water fast ends.

I’m watching some water fasting science videos and I’m so glad that I’m doing this fast!

It’s 3:50 pm and my stomach is growling just because I had to go to the kitchen and pull out of the fridge grapes, strawberries, etc. I don’t like cold fruit. So, with 2 hours and 10 min before my water fast end and meal, my body is growling in anticipation! It’s ok, I can wait. I’m committed to my ultimate goal of optimal health.

Food is not my master!

I pooped at 5:15 pm. That’s excellent!

I ate my meal and enjoyed every little bit: homemade 22-veggies soup with added avocado, olives, herbs, and lemon, as well as fresh fruit. Yummy and so healthy!

It’s 10:30 pm. I ran at night, I pooped again at 9:40 pm, yaaay, and I finished my 10000 steps. I’ll read in bed for a bit.

Very grateful for this 48 hours water fast!

Day 2 Water Fast 6-23-2020

It’s 6:30 am, and I’m waking up on my own, without an alarm. I feel good, very thirsty. My glass of fresh water is right here so I already drank some. No hunger, no body noises, no aches but I have not gotten up yet, I’m still lying down.

I want to capture what happens to a human body during fasting: autophagy, ketosis, and epigenetics. All of these health-altering benefits are additional to the weight loss benefits of water fasting. Also, this time I want to expand on the impact of water fasting on food addiction.

I’m learning about the stages of fasting on water.

It’s 11:24 am, and I just came back from the DeKalb Farmers Market. I bought a rainbow: purple cauliflower, red apples, berries, and tomatoes, green kale, spinach, broccoli, and grapes, yellow bananas, mangoes, and honeydew, and orange mandarins and papaya. I also got a watermelon -to break my water fast with it.

I feel good. I did a 40 min drive to the store, 45 min shopping and checkout, and a 50 min drive home. Now, I’m going to unload my car and finish my walk. I have 6500 steps to go in order to reach my daily goal of 10000 steps. I feel good!

It’s 12:29 pm, and I’m feeling good! Put all my groceries away already. I’m grateful for this water fast.

It’s 1:20 pm, and I’m walking outside with weights after handling some business at home. I do feel hungry but it’s tolerable. It was especially hard to put my beautiful deliciously smelling produce away. The watermelon, tomatoes, and berries all called my name. The papayas I bought are both so ripe! I can’t wait to eat them but my water fast comes first. I pooped very well at 8:30 am today: solid dark red from the beets I ate two days ago, all came out as one peace easily. Good!

I’m noticing that the more I practice fasting, the easier fasting gets for me. At first, it was a shock to my body but now, after so much experience, fasting causes minor inconveniences, not a shock.

It’s 3:55 pm, and I just took a shower after finishing my 10000 steps and making a trip to Whole Foods for some bread, organic hummus, cucumbers, and bell peppers. I then quickly ran to Publix for some Spanish olives. Now, my fridge is full of colorful organic food, and I’m ready to breakfast tomorrow: to break my fast. I’m feeling a bit dizzy so I’m now lying down and watching interviews with plant-based vegan doctors on YouTube. It’s been a rainy day with some sun, and I’m feeling very serene. It’s divine!

It’s 8:33 pm and I’ve watched almost all plant-based video interviews on the Love Gianna channel. I fell asleep for about an hour but woke up on my own ready for more learning. I’m just drinking water and watching an interview about The Nutritarian Died with Dr. Fuhrman.

It’s 9:20 pm, I did another ab workout because I feel really good. One thing I forgot to mention was that I carried all my grocery bags and my huge watermelon – all by myself today. I didn’t ask anyone for help.

Sometimes, a neighbor would see me unloading my car and offer to help. Today, I did it in the rain and loved it! I finished preparing my meal, which is waiting for me. I’ll eat at 10 pm, after 48 hours of fasting on water. I won’t be waiting until morning. I prepared watermelon chunks, apricots, mandarin, green and black grapes, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, and a banana.

I’m very thankful for my journey of fasting.

This time, I experienced no bad body odor, no bad mouth taste, and no constant rapid heartbeat. I’m getting used to fasting, and this will serve me for the rest of my life. I’m currently cooking in an InstaPot my multigrain meal for tomorrow: rice, lentils, beans, potato broth, herbs, and bay leaf. It smells amazing!

I’m excited about my plant-based meal!

It’s 10:13 pm. I’m eating my fruit. I just shared with María that I finished another 48-hour water fast. I wrote to her: “It’s no struggle. There’s no more emotional pain or crying. I feel like my understanding of food, my food history, my food environment, emotional manipulation I experienced through food as a child, beatings during meals growing up, then all the American experiences with food being used to try to fit in – this understanding and working through my journey to own my own mind – this is liberating, and I am strong in Christ!”

It’s 10:49 pm, and I finished eating. I ate mindfully, cherishing every bite and paying attention to satiety. I’m learning what “being full” feels like. In the last week or so, I left my food on a plate twice because I was “full” and tonight, I left some watermelon chunks on my plate after eating all the berries and fruits. This journey has been so healing and helpful!

I started my period. I’m going to bed. I’m at my ideal weight now. Most importantly, I’m so comfortable fasting that it will be no problem to maintain my water fasting weight loss results moving forward.

How to Prepare for a 48 Hour Water Fast

The best way to prepare for a 2 day water fast is to eat a plant-based diet and load on boiled potatoes, avocados, berries, fruits, kale, and colorful vegetables. I recommend to stop drinking coffee to prepare for fasting on water only. I also suggest praying and asking God to walk with you, to lead you, to guide you, and to help you on your journey.

Another important aspect of water fasting is to do it in secret. Don’t tell anyone – that is what the Bible teaches. Don’t brag about it, do it 1:1 with God. Prepare to fast in secret by canceling your dinners and lunches with friends. Make sure no one visits you and causes you to eat. It’s best to be alone in the presence of God, so prepare for this by telling friends that you will be on a digital detox. Fasting from social media is advisable.

Make sure you rest while fasting. Prepare to rest by taking your trash out, finishing your laundry, changing bed sheets, and doing what you need to do to prevent yourself from doing too many house chores while fasting on water for days.

Buy a journal to document your breakthroughs.

One final thing: figure out your why!

Here’s an example from my water fasting diary.

My reasons:

My relationship with food is dysfunctional, I’m obsessed with eating.

I want to clear my mind and be only obsessed with God.

I’m bloated and have a lower pooch, which I can’t stand.

I eat vegan cheese, meat, ice cream, and other vegan junk.

I think I’m addicted to honey, I eat a half a bottle of honey a day.

I’ve been trying to transition to being fully plant-based but I fail about once a month or even more often. I’m ready to do it! I hate craving chicken, lamb, pasta, and sushi.

I am completely healthy and want to honor God with my body as the Bible commands. I also want to honor my body for its hard work and protection from viruses and diseases. I’m grateful for my body and for the fact that it’s kept me protected from the Coronavirus COVID-19.

I have developed a habit of mindless eating which I can’t stand: I eat throughout the day by grabbing stuff and eating from the kitchen counter fast without noticing it. While I don’t eat fast food or sodas or fried chicken or french fries, I do get loaded on nuts, dates, fruit, bread, avocados, hummus, and grains, so I can never tell how much I ate on any given day. I don’t like this.

My overeating and binge-eating cause bloating. It also makes me insulin-resistant. It’s a waste of energy. It’s a sin of gluttony, and the Bible says put a knife to your throat if you’re given to gluttony! I like eating mindfully and slowly while sitting at a table and chewing well. I want to only eat what I need but I don’t know what being healthily full feels like. I don’t recognize when I’m feeling satiated.

How To Break 2 Day Water Fast

To break your water fast, drink a homemade vegetable broth, eat some watermelon chunks, and then add fiber once your body is ready. Typically, for each day of fasting, you’ll do half of that period for refeeding. Read “My Refeeding After a Water Fast.”

Make sure you actually have fruits and veggies you’ll need to break the fast. Don’t put yourself in a situation where you’re ready to resume eating, and the fridge is empty. That will lead you to eat crap, and you don’t want that, so buy a watermelon, melon, papaya, pineapple, and veggies in advance.

In the article mentioned above, I shared how I prepared my own refeeding food. There, you will find my recipes and perhaps get some helpful tips for your own refeeding after a water fast.

Is a 2 Day Water Fast Effective?

The way we as humans evolved was through feasting and fasting. Our ancestors hunted, we know that. How? Because we found many hunting tools and bones from animals used for food. But what proportion of their diet was meat? A very small proportion. Why don’t we find the vegetables they ate? Have you ever seen a vegetable survive millions of years of preservation? I thought so! So, they ate veggies, which we just now discover by examining their bones via innovative technology.

There were seasons. Right? Sometimes, they had veggies, berries, fruits, and sometimes they didn’t. Ok, well, they also hunted. That’s a good point, they did hunt. The most profound hunters, such as lions, only kill an animal every 7-10 days. How often do you think your naked and barefoot skinny relatives from millions of years ago were able to kill an animal? Um… Rarely! So, when they did have food, they feasted and stored fat. Then, they went for periods of time fasting due to famine.

So, water fasting is natural for us.

Not fasting is unnatural.

Dietary access is unnatural. Yet, today we aren’t forced by our environment to fast, so we have to artificiality force fasting on ourselves in order to protect our health and let our body rest, process its stored fat, and renew. However, it’s hard because our environment forces us to eat all the time: chewing coworkers talking about food all day long, networking lunches, business breakfasts, and large family dinners, with all-day snacks in between…

The result?

Look around you. What do you see?

The global obesity pandemic!

Fasting is the solution to the dietary access problem.

Is a 2 day water fast effective?

What do you mean when you ask this?

What does “effective” imply?

If being effective means promoting weight loss, body fat reduction, digestive health, insulin sensitivity, better sleep, greater energy, and optimized metabolism, then, yes, a 48 hour water fast is very effective because it does all that for you. It also improves your genes and reverses your aging. That’s pretty effective! Don’t you think?

Eight 2 Day Water Fast Benefits

Let me tell you what kinds of benefits I personally experienced from fasting on water for 48 hours. Keep in mind that I was very sick in terms of my respiratory conditions, extra-fat, depression, panic attacks, insomnia, Complex PTSD, OCD, and a host of other issues from narcissistic abuse cruelty endured in my marriage. Fasting cleared my weight, skin, and headspace. My life is very peaceful today.

Autophagy

Autophagy is a natural regeneration process that occurs at a cellular level in the body, reducing the likelihood of contracting some diseases as well as prolonging lifespan.

It is difficult to measure autophagy outside of a lab. However, experts do agree that the autophagy process initiates in humans after 18-20 hours of fasting on water. Maximum benefits occur at about the 48–72 hour mark of the water fast.

In 2016, Japanese scientist Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize for his discoveries of the mechanisms of autophagy: human body cells eating themselves. Since then, drug companies and academics have raced to find drugs that will stimulate the process of autophagy. Yet, the process can be induced naturally by fasting on water.

I have provided many scientific studies here to entice you to explore autophagy, and my recommendation is to check out this research: “A Comprehensive Review of Autophagy and Its Various Roles in Infectious, Non-Infectious, and Lifestyle Diseases: Current Knowledge and Prospects for Disease Prevention

Autophagy is the natural, regulated mechanism of the cell that removes unnecessary or disfunctional components. It allows the orderly degradation and recycling of cellular components. Three forms of autophagy are commonly described: macroautophagy, microautophagy, and chaperone-mediated autophagy.

Wikipedia

Autophagy is critical in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses, in particular in the respiratory system. Autophagy plays a central role in host defense through several mechanisms including: control of adaptive immunity through regulation of antigen presentation and lymphocyte development, direct elimination of invading pathogens, modulation of cytokine signaling and induction of innate immunity.7

Epigenetics

Provided that I grew up in an environment of severe hostility, abuse, violence, and cruelty, raised by people who were adulterous alcoholics, vicious and violent, given that my mother was literally insane and my father spent most of his life in jail, I definitely have not the best genes.

That’s why fasting excites me so much!

Fasting improves human genes by optimizing DNA.

It also reverses aging.

Aging is characterized by extensive remodeling of epigenetic patterns, which has been implicated in the physiopathology of age-related diseases. Nutrition plays a significant role in modulating the epigenome, and a growing amount of data indicate that dietary changes can modify the epigenetic marks associated with aging.

Aging can be defined as a time-dependent and progressive decline in functional status, which ultimately results in death. This complex and multifaceted phenomenon, which is a major risk factor for a wide range of non-communicable and chronic diseases, is the result of a complex interplay between genetic, environmental, and stochastic variables. While some researchers have suggested that aging is genetically programmed, others sustain that it is the result of the progressive accumulation of damage coupled with a decline in maintenance.

Caloric restriction (CR), i.e., the reduction of caloric intake without causing malnutrition, has proven to be by far the most effective intervention that can extend the maximum lifespan.

The beneficial effects of CR occur through an extremely wide range of molecular mechanisms, largely overlapping with aging hallmarks, among which epigenetic factors have recently gained interest.

The three main categories of epigenetic marks, DNA methylation (DNAm), post-translational histone modifications (PTHMs), and small non-coding RNAs, are considered as central regulators of the aging process.

Epigenetics patterns are greatly remodeled during aging, and this phenomenon has been implicated in the development of multiple age-related diseases. One important characteristic of epigenetic factors is their plasticity: epigenetic changes are reversible and they can be modulated by a wide range of environmental factors, including lifestyle habits and dietary interventions.

Epidenetics and water fasting

This is the first study to demonstrate that fasting induces changes in DNA methylation. DNA methylation is the most studied epigenetic feature and was initially considered to be mitotically stable. However, today we experience an increased understanding of environmental regulation of DNA methylation in adult life, and recent studies have shown that aging, exercise, and dietary factors can alter site-specific DNA methylation in humans, across different tissues. Epigenetic modifications have further been associated with differential gene expression and altered metabolism in key diabetic tissues, including adipose tissue. The establishment of epigenetic modifications during fetal development is dependent on maternal lifestyle, placental function, and nutrient supply [19] and may link an adverse prenatal environment with a higher risk of developing metabolic diseases in postnatal life.

Fasting on Water and Epigenetics

Researchers, in a groundbreaking study out of Temple University in Philadelphia, found it has to do with an epigenetic phenomenon known as “methylation drift.” The results were published in the journal Nature Communications.

To conceive of this breakthrough, we must understand epigenetics. This is the system in which genes are expressed or suppressed, depending on conditions in the environment. Epigenetic changes help an organism adapt to their environment and pass on adaptations to offspring.

We may contain genes for certain traits, but if they don’t match environmental situations, they may never be expressed.

DNA methylation is the process by which genes are expressed or suppressed. These are chemical markers that essentially activate certain genes by tagging them. The tags will tell a cell what type it will become, whether a blood or skin cell, or what-have-you. They also tell it what operations it will perform and when to perform them.

It’s important when DNA is replicated whether the right genes are turned on or off. Normal methylation is important for our growth and development. But abnormal methylation can cause certain diseases such as lupus, muscular dystrophy, and cancer. As we grow older, methylation begins to drift. Also called epigenetic drift, this is when a buildup of tags occurs within a certain gene, making its expression less pronounced.

These results may have an impact on treating or preventing age-related diseases such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes. It might also open up avenues for anti-aging medicine. The benefits to intermittent fasting include possible longevity, better insulin sensitivity, and help warding off neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s. This study would tend to strengthen those claims.

Water Fasting and DNA Methylation

Epigenetic modifications via dietary restriction (DR) may lead to epigenetic programming, providing protection against age-associated diseases, which in turn could lead to reduced morbidity and increased lifespan.

Recent studies have shown that aging possess an epigenetic component, with many age-associated epigenetic changes underlying hallmarks of aging.

For example, aging has been implicated in alterations to DNA methylation, to imbalance in histone modifications, to chromatin remodeling, and with an involvement of many miRNAs.

As such, it follows that aging may also be driven by extensive epigenomic remodeling, which may in turn promote the development of age-associated diseases.

Because epigenetic modifications may be modifiable by environmental changes and exhibit immense plasticity, they could be used transduce external signals and regulate aging through gene regulation.

It has been widely reported that dietary restrictions can promote changes in gene expression and attenuate age-associated changes across many organisms.

Dietary Restrictions and Epigenetics

Insulin Sensitivity

Water fasting reduces insulin resistance and improves insulin sensitivity. It’s very important if you don’t want to have type two diabetes and get your limbs cut off eventually.

Insulin resistance is resistance to the hormone insulin, which results in increased blood sugar. Insulin resistance is recognized as a predictor of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. This is caused by an overwhelmed pancreas, as illustrated here. Sugar tolerance can be impaired in humans by a high-fat diet consumption, according to the best explanation of insulin resistance by Dr. Michael Greger here.

In studies performed as early as the 1930s, scientists have noted a connection between diet and insulin intolerance. In one study, healthy young men were split into two groups. Half of the participants were put on a fat-rich diet, and the other half were put on a carb-rich diet. The high-fat group ate olive oil, butter, mayonnaise, and cream. The high-carb group ate pastries, sugar, candy, bread, baked potatoes, syrup, rice, and oatmeal. Within two days, tests showed that the glucose intolerance had skyrocketed in the group eating the high-fat diet.

Insulin needs your full attention because you don’t want to have diabetes. Diabetes distorts the way in which the body uses glucose – sugar that serves your body as fuel. When blood glucose levels rise, the pancreas normally makes the hormone called insulin, which signals cells to take sugar from the blood. Fat cells store excess glucose in the form of lipids (fats). In the most common form of diabetes, type 2 diabetes, cells lose their sensitivity to insulin.

Decreased insulin resistance and increased insulin sensitivity are some of the most valuable health benefits of water fasting to many people today because of the obesity epidemic in the world. This one is the most life-saving because so many diseases are caused by insulin resistance, leading to millions of deaths in America and worldwide.

New research adds to the mounting evidence that fasting may be helpful in the fight against obesity and its related conditions. By increasing certain proteins, the practice may protect against metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and liver disease

How fasting may prevent obesity-related insulin resistance

Fasting is the complete abstinence of all substances except water. It is a unique biological adaptation. It gives the body a chance to rapidly reverse many of the conditions associated with dietary excess. Diabetes happens to be one of those.

People have adequate insulin, but insulin is not working well because of insulin resistance. Dietary excess is thought to be one of the major contributing causes of that resistance.

Fasting is a useful tool for reversing the consequences of dietary excess. Conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, autoimmune diseases, some forms of cancer, and lymphoma all happen to respond exceptionally well to water fasting.

Self-Control

The Bible says “put a knife to your throat if you’re given to gluttony,” yet we give in to gluttony every day all day long. Why? Because our brain survived and evolved by finding, remembering, and preferring rich, calorie-dense foods. Our instinct is to eat the kinds of things that are the most dense calorically: ice cream, triple-cheese five-meats pizza, with a chocolate milkshake and cheese-loaded mushed potatoes! Our brain is normal, so it gets euphoric when we eat rich food, because it allows our brain to store lots of fat for later, when famine comes.

Only famine never comes…

So, our fat storages never get depleted.

Not only that but also profit-driven companies hire scientists and chemists to design food additives that cause your brain to get addicted and come back for more. It’s a pleasure trap.

To protect yourself, you need to constantly fight your instincts to eat rich, calories-dense foods with addictive additives. You need to force famine regularly on yourself, and that is hard to do.

So, by fasting on water for 48 hours, you get to practice self-control. Do it with God, through the power of the Holy Spirit dwelling in you. Self-control is one of the nine fruits of the Spirit, so you already have access to the gift of self-control. Reach out and take the gift.

Leverage the gift of self-control to get healthy.

Addiction Recovery

I grew up among addicts: my mom was an addict, my relatives were addicts, my “sisters” were severe addicts, and my neighbors were addicts. My mom’s girlfriends were addicts, they slept with other women’s husbands, committed suicide, drank alcohol to the point of unconsciousness, and the list goes on. My mom, aunts, and sister all also slept with other women’s husbands, and sex with random men was demonstrated in my home, as well as encouraged.

Both of my sisters were alcoholics and sex addicts. They both smoked all their lives. One of them was addicted to stealing: she always stole money and stuff from us. Her name was Vika, and she was my mother’s favorite. My mom adored Vika and hated me with passion.

I grew up committed to education and became the only person in my entire family to graduate from college. I went on to graduate from three universities, for which I was bullied and abused by my mother who hated me and was always encouraging me to commit suicide.

I began smoking at 10 years old, and the cigarettes were introduced to me at home. At five years old, I was served my first alcoholic beverage. At 16, I was encouraged to sleep around. I grew up addicted to sex and alcohol. Smoking was a huge problem but I quit at 17. Sex was my life until 2014 when I came to Christ, which is described in my testimony. Sex addiction recovery was very difficult. Today, I live a celibate life. Yet, after my recovery, I became addicted to food.

Water fasting helps with addictions.

That is exciting news for someone like me who’s struggled with multiple addictions from the moment of birth, especially given that both my family’s nature and nurture were against my proper development.

Here’s what the science says.

Water fasting is an extremely powerful tool to help overcome addictions caused by smoking, drinking, and drugs in general, as well as any food addictions, such as those caused by sugar, caffeine, chocolate, flavor enhancers, and others. Unfortunately, the list of food addictions is almost endless.

Addictions are composed of both physical and emotional elements.

Physically, addictive substances cause changes to your biochemistry which induce your body to demand more of the given substance in order to sustain homeostasis – the stability of your metabolism.

Emotionally, addictive substances manipulate the way you relate to food by playing on the ego’s tendency to become attached to objects in the world around you (read “Facing your ego“). You feel like you want or even need the given substance.

Because the physical and emotional elements of addiction are so closely intertwined, it’s all too easy to find yourself in a downward spiral.

Fasting works like a “reset” button to bring addiction to an end.

By not ingesting anything except pure water, you finally have a chance to start living without the influence of any outside factors. You can just be. The beauty of it is that, at the same time, water fasting also activates your cleansing and healing metabolism. This allows your body to start the process of recalibration toward new homeostasis: one in which you have no need for addictive substances or behaviors.

Your body will guide you toward what it already knows is best for you. Given that, ultimately, it is the emotional addiction that underlies any physical addiction, emotional withdrawal symptoms usually appear first: cravings.

Since addictive substances usually create toxic byproducts, the cleansing of a water fast also tends to result in physical withdrawal symptoms.

This is in addition to the more general detox symptoms of fasting on water, which are caused by the cleansing of accumulated environmental and metabolic toxins. Although these can be nasty – causing headaches, nausea, blurred vision, and severe swings of mood – they are rarely dangerous.

For those with eating disorders, water fasting can certainly help to alleviate and even overcome the abuse of food.

Spiritual Awakening

If you want to grow in faith, draw closer to God, learn more about yourself, understand the deeper meaning of life, and develop better habits of living mindfully, water fasting is the tool to help you do all that plus more! I highly recommend keeping a journal while fasting.

Pray before, during, and after your 48 hour water fast. Ask God to reveal Himself to you. Reach out to Him for help and courage. Ask God to rid you of your old ways and make you new. You truly can be a new person after a 2 day water fast because of autophagy and epigenetics.

Fast in secret. Don’t compromise your journey.

Stay true to your why.

Document your breakthroughs.

Improved Cardiovascular Health

Before I made water fasting a habit, I was unable to run for more than 2.5 minutes. Today, on July 12th 2020, I ran 1.9 miles in the morning non-stop for 41 minutes up and down the hills with weights in my hands. I’m 37!

Fasting on water helps clear arteries and improve blood flow, which improves cardiovascular health and brain health, too. An additional benefit of running is the runner’s high. I close my eyes and run without looking, and that makes me feel so free!

A healthy heart warrants a healthy life.

Enhanced Respiratory Health

Running was not an option for me before because I had sinus issues for many years. Water fasting helps keep my sinuses happy. I can breathe freely all day, all night, and while running. I never run out of breath but I do run out of energy due to the Summer heat. Tomorrow, I will try running at 5 am before it gets hot and humid. I want to see how long I’ll be able to run without the exhausting heat.

The point is that I can run because I can breathe!

I can breathe because I fast on water.

There’s an excellent study on this called “Autophagy and inflammation in chronic respiratory disease.”

Thanks to my ability to breathe fully, I also hula hoop, kayak, hike, squat, and do pushups. I have no limits today, and I’m almost 40! That is why I love and recommend water fasting so passionately.

My 2 Day Water Fast Experience

I have fasted for 48 hours six times in the last two years. It’s not been easy but it’s been beneficial in many ways. I’ve learned that when I tell people about my fasting adventures, my journey is instantly compromised because people think it’s crazy, unhealthy, and needless for someone skinny like me. I stopped explaining myself, especially given that most people do not have, appreciate, or understand the precious gift of good health.

Most people love doctors and pills.

They tell me water fasting is too radical.

From my perspective, obesity, diabetes, heart bypass surgeries, weight loss surgeries, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, and inability to poop for days, inability to sleep at night, inability to say no to crapy food and slowly dying because of food slavery – those are very radical examples of human suffering. I am not willing to submit to food slavery and be the victim of profit-driven enterprises working overtime to addict me to crap, which causes various deadly illnesses, the biggest of which of course is cancer. Cancer is activated by junk food and animal products consumption. It is completely avoidable, thanks to fasting and a plant-based diet. So, from my experience, I learned to fast in secret.

My experience also taught me to load of green leafy vegetables and wet starch before fasting: boiled white potatoes or steamed sweet potatoes. Eating some fat beforehand, such as seeds, nuts, and avocado, is advisable. Fasting on water implies drinking water only.

Finally, I learned from my water fast experiences that resting while fasting is essential, so I recommend staying at home and taking lots of naps, otherwise, instead of burning fat, the brain will need glucose, so the body will need protein. Fast in rest!

My 2 Day Water Fast Weight Loss

I have done a 2 day water fast six times, and I am at my ideal weight today. My weight loss didn’t happen overnight. However, with consistency, determination, and commitment, I lost 20 lb, thanks to fasting.

One thing to note: once the resources are mobilized within your body for detoxification, your weight loss will continue even after you stop fasting, but only if you eat healthily, sleep well, and exercise regularly.

Here are my water fast weight loss pictures.

30 day water fast results

My 48 Hour Water Fast Results

Fasting on water has had a multifaceted positive impact on my life and health. First, I was able to stop eating many products I do not approve of eating because they are loaded with crap. Because they are loaded with addictive crap, I kept eating them. Finally, I stopped, thanks to water fasting.

When I open my pantry and see that it’s empty, I smile. Before, it was filled with dried fruit, tons of oil-filled, salt-loaded nuts, bottles of avocado oil, coconut oil, and olive oil, jars of addictive honey, which had almost no honey in it but was made of cheap corn syrup, and I had in my pantry loads of bread. Now, I eat fresh fruits and veggies, a few raw nuts a few times a week, and I use no oil at all.

The following products filled with chemicals were ditched in recent months from my diet, my kitchen pantry, and my home.

I Ditched The Following Chemicals-Loaded Crap:

  • honey
  • pasta
  • vegan butter
  • vegan burgers
  • vegan ice cream
  • vegan cheeses
  • vegan pizza
  • vegan milk
  • vegan cheesecake
  • oil-filled salt-loaded roasted nuts
  • legumes
  • all oils

Second, I was able to develop fasting on water into a habit, and now it is no longer intimidating but a normal part of my life. That allowed me to stop fearing weight gain as I age. I’m equipped with a very effective weight-management tool passed to me by my ancestors who both feasted and fasted.

Third, fasting on water for 48 hours has allowed me to really practice self-control on a deep and consistent level. That is a gift because, without self-control, life is hard and all we do if follow our impulses.

Fourth, I am able to be clear-minded, laser-focused, high-energy, and very peaceful. That helped my depression recovery, panic-attacks elimination, cognitive improvement, and physical wellness optimization.

Fifth, I lost a ton of body fat and can now fit into all my gorgeous dresses, suits, pants, skirts, and coats! I love being lean and fit. I love my colorful wardrobe. I love feeling good. I love looking young, beautiful, confident, and overall my best self. I know first-hand what it’s like to not care, to gain weight, to overeat, to sleep all day, and cry unstoppably. I know what depression feels like. I’ve been there, in the dark dull deep despair. Now, I love colors and I love my health.

I love my life!

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a 48 hour fast put me in ketosis?

Possibly yes but maybe no. The body burns your glucose storage for about 72 hours, so ketosis typically starts on day 3 of a water fast. You can achieve ketosis and burn body fat on a 5 day water fast. That being said, a 2 day water fast has many benefits that you shall explore in this article. If you can, go one day at a time and see how long you can do it without vomiting or passing out. Ketosis is a great goal but you can also reverse your aging and improve your genes!

Is it safe to fast for 2 days?

It is safe to fast for two days if you’re not pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have no chronic conditions requiring you to take drugs, and if you are not underweight. This is not medical advice but I personally have done a 48 hour water fast six times in two years and it only improved my overall health.

Which is better 48 or 72 hour fast?

Fasting for 72 hours offers greater health benefits, such as ketosis, for example. That is not to diminish the benefits of a 48 hour water fast, which are many and discussed in great detail here: autophagy, epigenetics, anti-aging, insulin sensitivity improvement, etc.

Is a 48 hour fast worth it?

Yes, a 48 hour fast is so worth the struggle! I’ve failed it three times and I’ve succeeded at fasting on water for 2 days six times. So, from my personal experience, I assure you: the benefits of a two day fast outweigh the discomfort you’ll feel when your body is detoxing.

What will a 48 hour fast do for me?

A 48 hour water fast will help your genes clean themselves up, so you’ll improve your DNA and mitigate the risk of chronic illnesses. A 2 day water fast will also make you look and feel younger through its age-reversing technology called epigenetics. You’ll lose some weight and tighten your skin. You’ll sleep better, too. There are so many other things, all explained in my essay “Is a 2 Day Water Fast Effective?” Fasting will optimize your metabolism, too.

What can you eat to break a 48 hour fast?

To break a 48 hour fast, eat watermelon chunks, papaya chunks, or pineapple chunks. You can drink vegetable broth or eat a light vegetable soup.

What happens if you don’t eat for 2 days straight?

If you don’t eat for two days straight, your body will burn the extra-glucose in your blood vessels and then might start burning your stored fat. Here’s how Dr. Michael Klaper, who personally supervised thousands of fasts, explains this: “For the first 24 to 48 hours after beginning a water fast, the body burns off circulating blood sugar and sugar stored in the muscles and liver in the form of glycogen. The “real” metabolic fast does not begin until one metabolizes their blood sugar, in approximately 2 to 3 days. At that time, the body begins to burn fat tissue for fuel. When that happens, molecules called ketones enter the blood circulation making you feel no longer hungry and bringing with it a sense of great wellbeing.”

If you don’t eat for two days straight, your body will renew itself, improve its DNA, and make you younger and healthier. It happens thanks to autophagy. The scientists in the study called “Short-term fasting induces profound neuronal autophagy” explain how autophagy kicks in when you’re fasting: “Autophagy is a key homeostatic process, in which cytosolic components are degraded and recycled through lysosomes, and can cause neurodegeneration in tissue culture and in vivo. Upregulation of this pathway may be neuroprotective. One well-recognized way of inducing autophagy is by food restriction. We use the method to identify constitutive autophagosomes in cortical neurons and Purkinje cells, and we show that short-term fasting leads to a dramatic upregulation in neuronal autophagy. The increased neuronal autophagy is revealed by changes in autophagosome abundance and characteristics, and by diminished neuronal mTOR activity in vivo, demonstrated by a reduction in levels of phosphorylated S6 ribosomal protein in Purkinje cells. The increased abundance of autophagosomes in Purkinje cells was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy. Our data lead us to conclude that sporadic fasting represents a simple, safe, and inexpensive means to promote autophagy as therapeutic neuronal response.”

You’ll experience oneness with God. Here’s how the fast-savvy leader Mahatma Gandhi explains this: “A complete fast is a complete and literal denial of self. It is the truest prayer..” You also experience spiritual liberation and feel much stronger and more grounded in who you are, what matters the most in life, as well as your values. Here’s how Mahatma Gandhi explains this: “A genuine fast cleanses the body, mind, and soul. It crucifies the flesh and, to that extent, it sets the soul free.

Conclusion

In this article, I shared with you why I practice a 48 hour water fasst regularly. I provided you with solid scientific research studies supporting and proving the need for fasting in humans. Also, I shared why I failed at a 2 day water fast three times and how I’ve completed a 48 hour water fast six times in the last two years. I’ve explained the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of fasting.

Let me remind them to you real quick below.

2 Day Water Fast Benefits:

  1. Autophagy
  2. Epigenetics
  3. Insulin Sensitivity
  4. Self-Control
  5. Addiction Recovery
  6. Spiritual Awakening
  7. Improved Cardiovascular Health
  8. Enhanced Respiratory Health

From my personal experience, I know that fasting on water for two days is more doable than longer fasts, however, day two of a water fast is the hardest one. Many times, I went up to 38 hours but couldn’t do 48. That is why I recommend praying before, during, and after the fast.

If physical fasting is not accompanied by mental fasting it is bound to end in hypocrisy and disaster.

Mahatma Gandhi

Before I was able to unlock my physical health and reached the best shape of my life, I had to unlock my spiritual health. After narcissistic abuse in my marriage, which I explained here in great detail, I didn’t want to live, so I didn’t care if I was healthy or dead. Why? Because I was manipulated to believe that I was worthless and that there was no hope.

I had to discover who I am in Christ.

The truth about my identity set me free.

Today, I help women see themselves the way God sees them. I’ve specifically been focusing on identity in Christ. From the Bible, I discovered 52 incredibly-positive things God says about us as His daughters. Those 52 precious discoveries turned into 52 Biblical affirmations I created to encourage and empower Christian women.

To help share this life-changing information with you, I created an ebook called #52Devotionals. Download it now for free
